Victims of defective Chinese drywall have won another victory, now that a Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge has ruled against drywall manufacturer Taishan, according to the Miami Herald. In combination with its competitor, Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin –who has already agreed to a $200 million settlement – nearly 4,500 homes were contaminated with drywall containing high levels of sulfur in Florida and its surrounding states.
The case was filed by Miami-Dade-based home building firm Lennar who purchased and used large amounts of the bad drywall. Taishan claimed that it was too far removed from the American market to be liable but Judge Joseph Farina ultimately ruled in Lennar’s favor. “We expect this ruling will set a favorable precedent for other homebuilders and victims across the country,” Hilarie Bass, the Greenberg Traurig lawyer representing Lennar, said.
